Motorcycle Insurance and Your Teen Driver
There are many adult motorcycle riders in Spokane, WA, who travel the streets and highways of the city on their way to their day’s destination. When you have a 16-year-old who also wants access to your two- or three-wheeled, motorized transportation, you’ll want to know what is required for insurance. Capital Insurance agents are well-versed in what steps are required to add a teen driver to your policy.
Teen Motorcycle Requirements
Before you can add a 16-year-old to your policy, the state has a couple of requirements before they can legally drive a motorcycle.
While a 16-year-old can legally obtain a motorcycle endorsement, he or she must have a valid driver’s permit issued by the state of Washington.
A motorcycle instruction permit must be obtained for either a 2-wheel or 3-wheel motorcycle. The permit is in effect for 180 days. In lieu of the permit, an approved training course that includes a skills test for the teen may satisfy the requirement.
Because the teen is under 18 years of age, a motorcycle safety course approved by the state is mandatory and must be taken and passed to get an endorsement. The teen must also take and pass a riding skills test and a written knowledge test.
Before any steps can be taken to get a motorcycle endorsement, a consent form signed by the parent or guardian is required.
Once all requirements are met and the teen has received the endorsement, contact your insurance company immediately to add the new driver to your policy.
